Geographic Information Systems

Welcome

Welcome to the Geographic Information Systems page. UCR's Geographic Information System (GIS) is being developed to allow it's faculty, staff, and students to make informed decisions regarding the future. The information contained in the GIS is allowing UCR departments to analyze the physical features that currently exist in the University prior to deciding to make changes to the facilities, services and infrastructure available. This ability to examine as many of the factors effecting development helps UCR to make more informed decisions. The GIS department is being utilized by many of UCR's departments to support their daily activities. Almost everything that the University does has some measure of "place", and can be represented in the University's Geographic Information System.

Vision

GIS is an easy-to-use decision-making tool that enables access to data and information, promotes innovative solutions, and improves customer service to faculty, staff, and students. It is the vision of the GIS team to work with University departments to ensure that the value of GIS technology is understood and is used appropriately.  The GIS team works to develop valid geographic analysis and research methods to benefit the decision making processes throughout the University, which will result in the improvement of the health, safety, and quality of life of its faculty, staff, and students.

Mission

The mission of the GIS team is to support the activities of the University of California Riverside's faculty, students, and staff by providing and maintaining accurate, current and complete geospatial data. This support will be provided through leveraging the knowledge contained in this information by using a set of procedures and techniques collectively referred to as a Geographic Information System. Using the Geographic Information System (GIS), the team will enable the faculty, staff, and students to make decisions impacting the future of UCR in an informed and logical manner.
